New insights into the Triassic origins of dinosaurs and their close relatives

A talk by Prof Richard Butler (Birmingham)

Dinosaurs were the dominant animals on land for >130 million years, from the end of the Triassic Period through to their demise at the Cretaceous-Palaeogene boundary. Understanding the origins and rise of dinosaurs in the Triassic has historically been hampered by a poor fossil record that has been the subject of less research than later intervals of the Mesozoic. I will discuss recent work on dinosaur origins, including the discovery of the oldest close dinosaur relatives yet known, and describe how dinosaurs rose slowly to dominance over more than 40 million years.
