SUMMARY:Castle Quarry Kenilworth & Gibbet Hill Quarries - Geoconservation Work
DESCRIPTION:To enable the planned fieldtrips on 8th and 15th July to go ahead some geo conservation work is required at these two sites. It should be a maximum of 2 hours on each site only following extensive geoconservation work undertaken last year. \n\n\n\nCastle Quarry KenilworthThe work is likely to mainly consist of cutting down vegetation that has grown in the last year so that the outcrops can be accessed. \n\n\n\nLong trousers and long sleeved shirts are recommended on the Castle Quarry site in particular due to stinging nettles. \n\n\n\nTools required secateurs and shears\, gardening gloves. \n\n\n\nThere is a steep access down the quarry face with very little to hand onto so is not suitable for those with reduced mobility or not sure on their feet. \n\n\n\nThe plan is to undertake the Castle Quarry work first at 10am and then move on to the Gibbett Hill site.Paid parking for non English Heritage members is available opposite the English Heritage shop (///moth.seats.covers). \n\n\n\nGibbet Hill QuarriesWhen complete at Castle Quarry or at 12MD we will go over to the Gibbett Hill site where this is less to cut down but important to create good access for the evening field trip. The same equipment is required for this site. \n\n\n\nPaid parking bays are available within the university area\, whilst free street parking after 6pm is available in Moreall Meadows. Meet in Moreall Meadows for 18.30pm \n\n\n\nExtreme caution is required when crossing the busy Gibbet Hill Road to access these sites. If you have a high visibility vest or jacket\, we recommend it is worn. \n\n\n\nIf you wish to help out please send an email to: julieharrald@googlemail.com \n\n\n\nFor the event flyer please click here

SUMMARY:Day Field Meeting: Burton Dasset - Ray Pratt
DESCRIPTION:WGCG & BCGC Field Trip to Burton Dassett. Field trip Leader: Ray Pratt \n\n\n\nThe Burton Dassett Country Park\, part of the Cotswolds\, is located in Southern Warwickshire just off the M40. This is a popular upland leisure area for walkers and picknickers with good parking and toilet facilities. The park has been created in 1972 from what was a complex of quarries and intervening disturbed ground\, mostly overgrown but with some good exposures of Liassic Marlstone Rock Formation chiefly about 200m south west of Windmill Hill. This large site incorporates several stratigraphic units and lithologies ranging from the Lower Jurassic Dyrham Formation to the Middle Jurassic Northampton Sand. Take a look at the 6-minute WGCG video on the geology of Burton Dassett https://youtu.be/p6oUfmzB3yQ \n\n\n\nCar Parking at Burton Dassett costs. £3.50 per day (can be paid by card or cash)\n\n\n\n\nThe geological map of England and Wales (opposite) shows that the rocks of Southern Warwickshire and North Oxfordshire are in a zone (shaded blue) which stretches from Dorset through the Cotswolds to North Yorkshire. These rocks were formed during the Jurassic Period of time\, roughly between 135 and 195 Ma (million years) ago. The rock layers are tilted very gently towards the south east and disappear below younger Cretaceous rocks (green). \n\n\n\n\nThe view WNW from the Beacon tower location is believed to be a consequence of Quaternary glaciation and the former site of  a glacial lake. \n\n\n\nWGCG and BCGS member\, Ray Pratt\, will lead this 2–3-hour trip. Following the trip participants may wish to walk around the area taking in the 12th Century Church\, (made of local stone)\, the site of a Saxon graveyard\, ancient springs\, ridges and furrows and the Beacon\, a circular tower built on one of the hill tops. A packed lunch is recommended. Alternatively\, the Yew Tree pub in nearby Avon Dassett offers a relaxing spot for those wishing to socialise and refresh before setting off back home. For NT members Upton House and Gardens at Edge Hill is a short drive to the west. \n\n\n\nTo register for this trip\, send an email to: geostart@btinternet.com
