Gibbet Hill – Geological Conservation – Led by Jane Allum

November 21, 2026 @ 10:30 am – November 22, 2026 @ 1:30 pm

Gibbet Hill LGS22, is a small disused quarry located close to Gibbet Hill Road, opposite the University of Warwick medical campus. On road parking is usually available on Moreall Meadows road (///stores.ship.green).

All vegetation clearance equipment will be provided however if you have a reflective vest it would be advisable to wear as Gibbet Hill Road is busy. If you need a lift in the Kenilworth area that can also be arranged. We anticipate being on site for say 3 hours however if you can spare half an hour on your Saturday morning that would appreciated.

Last year a small group of WGCG members diligently spent time cleaning the quarry faces to reveal its geological features and clearing the access routes to this geological gem within our LoGS portfolio (image on the left, the image on the right is what one of the three accesses to the exposure look like in the Summer this year before some limited vegetation clearance prior to the evening field trip)

The Geology:
This quarry exhibits the best exposure of the Gibbet Hill Conglomerate which lies within the Permian Kenilworth Sandstone Formation. Three quarry faces exhibit an overall fining up sequence with originally, over 3m of conglomerate overlain by 1m of firm brown sandstone all deposited in a fluctuating fluvial setting. The conglomerate consists of well-rounded pebbles up to 8cm diam. set in a calcareous matrix. The clasts are mainly sandstones or mudstones, with quartzites and red chert, all ascribed to the Carboniferous Keresley Member. Minor amounts of Precambrian tuffs and Carboniferous limestones have also been recorded (Old et al. 1987). The lower part of this section is now obscured.

Caution is advised when crossing the busy Gibbet Hill Road to access the site.
