Ask a Geologist at the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum – 30/05/26

Report by Gareth Jenkins

Geoweek 2026

Geoweek 2026 is a week long celebration of GeoScience across the UK.  In Warwickshire, WGCG choose to provide field trips to Solihull and Warwick. The end of the week was celebrated with Ask a Geologist at the Herbert Museum and Art Gallery in Coventry.

WGCG Volunteers from left to right: Brian Ellis, Gareth Jenkins, Kate Torrens, Joe Mazgajcyzk and Peter Hawsworth.

If you’re interested in volunteering for future Ask a Geologist events please contact [email protected].  You do not need to be a geologist to support this.

Ask a Geologist allows the public to discuss geology in our everyday lives, geological careers, and geological science in general. We always have rocks, minerals and fossils on hand which the public can view and discuss.  Additionally, a number of posters, geological references and free brochures of nearby geology trails are made available.  A wifi microscope allowed the specimens to be viewed on a tablet screen.

The event was organised to coincide with the museum’ ‘new Palaeoverse exhibition Unearth the Palaeoverse: Dig Into the Dawn of Time – The Herbert Art Gallery & Museum

A steady stream of interested youngsters and carers took interest in the specimens and posters on display.  Discussions about long tusked elephants and paleo-climates were common – along with wondering about how different minerals and rocks appear under the microscope.

WGCGs North Sea rock core was on display which also generated much discussion.

It was a great pleasure to be part of a wonderful day with the museum.  Everyone enjoyed themselves and the museum have invited WGCG back in October 2026.

Thanks to Brian Ellis, Gareth Jenkins, Kate Torrens, Joe Mazgajcyzk and Peter Hawsworth.

Remember, if youre interested in volunteering for exciting events like this and others then please get in touch at [email protected] and keep an eye on our website and mailing list.
